ELLA BAKER, OUR ROLE MODEL
Known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement", Ella Baker believed in and empowered young Americans and students to be leaders and changemakers. Watch a video about her life's work and read about how Ella Baker became the namesake of our school. As parents, we hope you are inspired by Ella Baker and continue to empower your children to effect change.
OUR BLACK LIVES MATTER STATEMENT
Approved by General Membership on June 12, 2020
Ella Baker Elementary PTSA stands against racism and believes unequivocally that Black Lives Matter.
Using our collective voices to advocate for Every Child requires us to recognize the systemic and institutional power structures that prevent equality and create gaps in opportunity. We must strive to amplify the voices of those who have been unheard and treated unjustly.
The senseless killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and countless others have caused deep pain. We stand in solidarity with the Black community, and will work to be allies in the fight for equality.
As the PTSA of a school named after Ella Baker, a Black civil rights leader and human rights activist, we stand with her call for direct action. We will:
The PTSA's mission is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. We can only do that when all are valued, included, and safe. We are still learning and we invite you to join us in these discussions and this effort.
